What is a Mini ATV?

You probably know what an ATV is already. ATV stands for All Terrain Vehicle and looks like a motorcycle with four wheels instead of two. Adults can be seen riding ATVs at motorcycle tracks, in fields, at campgrounds, and just about anyplace with a lot of room to go fast and with a lot of hills and obstacles to be challenged and add a little bit of dangerous fun into the mix.

A Mini ATV is just about exactly like a full sized ATV but in a miniature version for the kids. There are three size groups of Mini ATV motors available and each size is specified for a certain age group of children and young adults. These age groups are actually the law in many states, so if you are purchasing a Mini ATV for your child, be sure to get the appropriate size for their age.

The smallest Mini ATV engine is the 50cc engine and is for kids from 6 to 12 years of age. The next size up is the 90cc engine Mini ATV, which is for kids from 12 to 16 years old. Anything of 90cc is strictly for kids and young adults over 16 years of age.

The standard size and age restrictions are in place in order to protect children from being injured because they are riding something that is too large and too powerful for them. Even if your child is large for his or her age, they still should be on the Mini ATV that is specified for their age, and that has a lot to do with the power more so than the size of the Mini ATV. Most kids, even when they don’t look their age, still act their age and may not be mature enough to handle the more powerful bike. There are some exceptions to the rule, but it is a rule nevertheless and if the rule is the law in your state, it must be followed.

Mini ATVs are pretty much exactly like their full sized counterparts, with many of the same parts and with all of the same dangers. Make sure that your kids wear their gear and learn to ride safely in order to get the most fun out of their new Mini ATV.
